Engineering Summary
Direct guide to diagnosing and eliminating implicit algebraic loop errors in Simscape physical modeling networks. Covers Jacobian sparsity, solver relative tolerances, and zero-crossing minimization.
The Mechanics of Algebraic Loops in Simscape Physical Networks
In physical modeling domains, an algebraic loop arises whenever an output signal is fed back to compute its own instantaneous input without an intervening energy storage element (an integrator, capacitor, or inertia). Mathematically, this converts an explicit ordinary differential equation (ODE) into an implicit differential-algebraic equation (DAE) of index 1 or higher:
0 = F(x, dx/dt, u, t) • J = ∂F / ∂x
When the Newton-Raphson nonlinear solver inside Simulink fails to converge within the maximum iterations (default 100), the simulation crashes with the classic error: "Cannot solve algebraic loop containing block... Solver failed to advance past time t."
3-Step Diagnostic Workflow for Solver Divergence
Run the Algebraic Loop Highlighter: Execute Simulink.BlockDiagram.getAlgebraicLoops('modelname') in the MATLAB terminal to display every interconnected feedback loop in bright red.
Verify Physical Initial Conditions: Unpinned initial pressures, voltages, or shaft angular velocities force the solver to execute large Newton steps during the initial time step (t = 0), triggering divergence.
Insert Domain-Specific Compliance or Memory: In physical systems, true zero-delay loops do not exist. Inserting a high-stiffness compliance (such as a rotational spring-damper or RC filter) introduces a high-frequency pole that breaks the direct feedthrough without distorting low-frequency dynamics.
Solver Configuration Matrix for Stiff Physical Systems
Default variable-step solvers like ode45 (explicit Runge-Kutta) are mathematically incapable of handling stiff physical networks. The following solver matrix must be applied:
